Year 4 Fun in Chester

Date: 6th May 2025 @ 1:21pm

On the first day back of the term, Year 4 had the fantastic opportunity to visit Chester for their WOW starter as part of their new history topic - Invaders and Settlers of Roman Britain. The children were very excited about their visit and it was wonderful to see so many of them at school early and eager to start their day.

Once we had arrived at DEVA: Roman Experience Chester we were split into our two classes. Citrine began their learning expedition by going back in time with a Roman guide. They learnt all about what it was like to sail to new lands aboard a galley, had a quick Geography lesson about the different Roman lands and explored what a Roman marketplace would have looked like. The museum was filled with immersive experiences and our guide showed us everything there was to know about Roman Britain. One of our favourite moments was watching a gladiator fight and learning about what it took to be in the Roman army.

Whilst Citrine were inside, Amethyst spent the morning outside learning about Roman army tactics. With our guide we were taught about how all Roman soldiers had to fight right-handed, carry their shield in their left hand and about the turtle formation that soldiers used to defend themselves. We even learnt all about the battle cries Romans would use to scare off the enemies. Unfortunately, the rain started, so all of Amethyst class had to complete their battle training outside in the rain - just like real Romans would have to!

We all returned together for our speedy lunchtime, before the excitement started again in the afternoon.

This time, it was Amethyst's turn to be taken back in time and walk through Roman Britain. We even had the opportunity to explore Roman aqueducts through the interactive play area and dress up as gladiators! Whilst Citrine were outside completing our battle training, we learnt all about the chants that Roman armies would use as they marched towards their goals.

The whole day was fantastic and gave us lots of knowledge to begin our new topic with!
